WINE AND GRAPE MONTH: Grand opening set as part of July events showcasing area wineries
TUESDAY, JUNE 23, 2009

The grand opening of Coyote Moon Winery, Clayton, will highlight July as Wine and Grape Month in Jefferson County. The winery had a soft opening June 1 and has seen a lot of customers so far, said owner Philip J. Randazzo. "I've just been blown away by it," he said. "We made what I thought was enough or a little too much and it's going fast."
The winery is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. The July 18 grand opening will have entertainment and be "a big party."Last week, the county Board of Legislators signed a proclamation designating July for a celebration of the growing industry. "It's just an awesome gesture on their part," Mr. Randazzo said. "There isn't a day that goes by that a new grower doesn't call me asking about growing grapes and how to get started." "It's great to see that sector of agriculture growing in Jefferson County," said Legislator Philip N. Reed, who represents District 3, which includes the towns of Alexandria and Orleans. "The members of the wine industry have worked well together ... and this is one way to recognize those efforts." Local wineries and vineyards and the Agricultural Development Corp. are organizing or participating in several events to celebrate the growing industry next month.
Mr. Reed said the wineries fit well with the tourism and agriculture that already exists in the county. Jay M. Matteson, the county's agricultural coordinator, said July was chosen because of the grand opening of Coyote Moon Winery and because it's a strong month for tourism.
